Appalachian Trail Pilgrimage to God’s Thumbprint
Join us for our fall backpacking pilgrimage along a section of the longest hiking footpath in the world. Three full days of uphills and downhills and trail magic. Our planned route is in Southwest Virginia and will take us over Chestnut Knob, a 4400-foot bald, and around Burke’s Garden, a farming valley known as “God’s Thumbprint” because it’s surrounded by a 360-degree ridge line . . . as if God’s thumb pressed right into the mountains.
Total mileage over 3 days will be about 17 miles, but with the elevation gain and way-too-heavy pack weight it will feel more like 30 miles, so pilgrims will need to be mentally and physically prepared for strenuous climbs, groaning bones, and blisters. Anticipate practice hikes, with loaded packs, to prepare for the physical demands of this Pilgrimage. Trip dates are October 22-24, 2021.
A total of fourteen spots will be available and allocated between newcomers and returning pilgrims based on interest. Estimated Pilgrimage cost is $175.
