Education / Support for Children
Cone Elementary School Tutoring Program serves Cone Elementary School, a Title I school that needs a number of volunteers to work independently (but under the direction of teachers) with pupils who would benefit from the attention of an adult. Often these childre do not have anyone at home who can call out spelling words or supervise reading. The tutoring emphasis in the past year yas been in the third and fourth grades to help these students pass the No Child Left Behind end-of-year exams. Volunteers give one or two hours per week at the time and day of choice, September through early May, with many teacher workdays and school holidays! It is a rewarding experience. An annual school supplies drive, which benefits the children at Cone Elementary who are unable to purchase supplies, takes place each August.
